BlackBerry® Internet Service 2.4—Upgrade Today!

A new version of BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) launched on September 15, 2007. Please take a few moments to understand the features and benefits of this new service, including possible impacts if you are either a new or existing AT&T BlackBerry Internet Service customer.

BIS 2.4 offers exciting new features for customers who are currently using BIS 1.8, in addition to the automatic delivery (push) experience of your personal Internet Service Provider email to your BlackBerry or BlackBerry Connect enabled device. We strongly recommend that all BIS 1.8 users upgrade to BIS 2.4 to take advantage of these new capabilities.

Feature improvements of the new BIS 2.4 include:

  • Two-way synchronization support for Yahoo! mail subscribers—two-way synchronization of deletes to and from the Yahoo! mail inbox, as well as two-way, virtual real-time synchronization of message status (read/unread). When you delete a message from your Yahoo! mail account, the message is also deleted on your device (and vice-versa). And when you read a Yahoo! mail message on your BlackBerry, the message is immediately marked 'read' in your Yahoo! mail account.
  • Enhancements for Google Gmail subscribers—You are no longer required to enable POP (Post Office Protocol) before integrating your Gmail account. And you now get virtual real-time (instead of poll-based) delivery of Gmail messages.
  • Wireless Address Book Attachments—open electronic contact attachments (vCard format) on the device. Add these contact details directly to the BlackBerry Address Book and even attach an address from the BlackBerry Address Book to any email sent.
  • Attachment uploading—attach files up to 3MB in size stored on the BlackBerry (i.e., pictures saved to the internal memory or documents saved to the expandable memory card) to email or MMS messages.  No need to wait until you're home to upload and send files to friends, family and colleagues.
NOTE: Requires that your BlackBerry have handheld code 4.2 or higher
  • Voicemail attachment playback—if you get voicemail messages from work or home sent as email attachments (mp3 and WAV), you can listen to these messages virtually anywhere, making it even easier to stay up-to-speed and responsive throughout the day.
NOTE: File size supported up to 500 KB.  Requires that your BlackBerry have handheld code 4.1 or higher.
  • Multiple "Sent-From" Addresses—When composing an email on the device, you can set which integrated email account you want the "Sent From" field to display.
  • One-way Reconciliation—Perform these functions on your device and the action (send, delete or read/unread status) will also appear in the integrated Internet email account.
  • Individual Email Account Icons —If you have a BlackBerry device upgraded with BlackBerry Device Software v4.1 or higher, new icons will appear on the Home screen for each integrated email account. Click on each icon to easily view incoming/outgoing mail from that account. NOTE: You may still view all of your messages by clicking on the Message Inbox icon.
  • Improved Attachment Viewing —Continue to view popular formats like JPEG, BMP, TIFF, Microsoft® Word, Excel, PowerPoint®, Adobe® PDF. And with BIS 2.4, you can now view PowerPoint presentations in slideshow format.
  • Unlimited email storage —Because BIS 2.4 offers direct access to integrated accounts, a Web version of your BlackBerry Internet Service inbox is no longer needed. Therefore, you will not have to manage your email storage. With the upgrade, all messages automatically age after 30 days.
  • BlackBerry Mail Connector Delegation—If you use BlackBerry Mail Connector to access Microsoft Exchange or IBM® Lotus® Domino® email, you can now delegate the required email server network connection.

IMPORTANT NOTE for customers who created an account prior to June 12, 2006: Significant improvements have been made to BlackBerry® Internet Service with the introduction of BIS 2.4. Existing BIS 1.8 users who have not migrated to version 2.4 will be prompted with a migration option after you enter your user ID and password.  Read and understand the changes before making a decision. Select "Yes" if you wish to migrate, or "No" if you wish to continue to use your existing service. Once you upgrade to BIS 2.4, you will not be able to revert to the previous version.

Some BIS 1.8 customers may have concerns that certain features supported in BIS 1.8 are not present in BIS 2.4. Those BIS 1.8 features have been replaced with equivalent or enhanced features, or the need for the feature has declined, as detailed below:

  • BIS 1.8 supports access to your BlackBerry BIS mailbox from a desktop computer web browser. When BIS 1.8 was launched, some ISP email providers did not offer webmail access to subscriber mailboxes. In the intervening years, almost all ISP email providers now support webmail access to subscriber mailboxes; therefore, BIS 2.4 does not support access to your BlackBerry BIS mailbox from a desktop computer web browser.
  • BIS 1.8 supports user-created folders within the BlackBerry BIS mailbox. In BIS 1.8, email from all sources was delivered to a single inbox; therefore, some users created personal folders to sort mail from each ISP through which they had a mailbox. Since BIS 2.4 supports separate icons for each individual email account, there is no longer a need to separate out email from different accounts using folders. After a migration to BIS 2.4, folders will exist on the device for 30 days only.
  • BIS 1.8 limited the amount of email that each user could store. Therefore, some subscribers managed their BIS mailboxes manually using their devices, while others did so using desktop computer web browser access. BIS 2.4 supports unlimited storage, with automatic mailbox management via a new auto-aging feature. Emails older than 30 days will automatically be deleted from your BIS 2.4 mailbox, and from your device. Note: these emails will not be deleted from the source ISP or personal email account mailbox; you will still be able to access these emails directly from your ISP or personal email account (for example, through your desktop POP3 email client).
  • BIS 1.8 provided limited support of corporate Lotus Domino iNotes or Lotus Domino Web Access mailboxes. With BIS 2.4, Lotus Domino iNotes and Lotus Domino Web Access is supported if you download and use BlackBerry Mail Connector which requires a continual desktop connection to your company's email server using your computer or a delegate.

Thank you again for choosing AT&T and BlackBerry for your wireless email solution. We appreciate your business.
