Because smartphone users tend to consume a higher amount of data services – for activities such as advanced email, mobile Web, games, and applications – smartphone customers will be required to subscribe to a data plan. With a data plan smartphone customers can take full advantage of their device features without worrying about a fluctuating or unusually high bill.

Q: I use a smartphone today. Does this mean that I need to sign up for a data plan?
A: If you purchased a smartphone prior to September 6, 2009 and are using data on a pay per use basis, you will not be required to add a data plan at this time. However, data plans let customers take advantage of browsing the mobile Web , search, advanced e-mail capabilities, applications, games, music services and more – without the worry of bill shock; we recommend that all smartphone users have a data plan.
Q: Does the policy apply to current customers who upgrade their device?
A: Yes. Activations and device upgrades going forward require a smartphone data plan.
Q: I want a smartphone, but don't want a monthly data plan, what options do I have?
A: Our quick messaging phones are a great option for customers who want a full QWERTY keyboard for messaging but may not want to commit to the monthly data plan required for smartphones. We also have a huge selection of other phones and devices offering a solution to meet every customer need.
