Q. Will I be charged long distance in addition to the per-minute roaming rate?

A. No. All calls you make or receive while roaming internationally are charged at the per-minute voice roaming rate—with no additional long distance charges.

Q. What are the rates for calling/data usage in the Gulf of Mexico?

A. Pay-per-use rates for voice calls made or received in the Gulf of Mexico are $0.79 per minute. Charges will be displayed in the domestic section of your wireless bill. Pay-per-use rate for data usage in the Gulf of Mexico is $.010 per KB. Charges will be displayed on the International section of your wireless bill.

Q. How am I charged for voicemail calls while roaming internationally?

A. Voicemail calls are charged as follows:

When your device is on:
  • Calls that you do not answer that are routed to the AT&T voicemail system will be charged as an international roaming incoming call to your device.
  • In addition, the foreign carrier's routing of that call to the AT&T voicemail system may generate an outgoing call charge from your device's location to the U.S.
  • These charges apply even if the caller disconnects from the voicemail system without leaving a message.
If your device is turned off or in flight mode and the wireless network is off:
  • When someone tries to call you, the call will go directly to your personal voicemail greeting.
  • Since the network does not try to deliver the call to you in a foreign country, there are no international roaming charges.
When receiving Visual Voicemail messages on your smartphone or Apple® iPhone®:
  • Visual Voicemail messages received when roaming outside of the U.S. will be charged at international roaming data rates, either at the international pay-per-use data rate or against your smartphone or iPhone international data package.

Q. How can I access voicemail while roaming internationally?

A. To retrieve voicemail messages:

  1. Press and hold the retrieval key on your device (this is typically the "1" key).
  2. Interrupt your personal greeting by pressing the "*" key.
  3. Enter your voicemail password.
    • If you don't know your password you can reset using the following methods:
      1. Call Customer Service
        • In the U.S.: Call 611 or 800-331-0500
        • Outside the U.S.: Call 916-843-4685
      2. Change online at att.com/mywireless
        1. Log in to att.com/mywireless.
        2. Under Quick Links, select Wireless Support.
        3. Under Phone/Device Support select Reset Voicemail Password.
        4. Submit request to reset voicemail password. A text message will be sent to the phone with the new voicemail password.
  4. If you reach the main voicemail system greeting instead of your personal greeting, enter your 10-digit mobile number, then follow steps 2 and 3 (above).

Q. What is a GSM world phone?

A. GSM world phones are devices that operate on international frequencies. These can include "tri-band" phones/devices (which operate on three of the four GSM frequencies) and "quad-band" phones/devices (which operate on all four of the GSM frequencies).

GSM networks in North and South America operate at frequencies of 850 or 1900 MHz, while most networks in other countries operate at frequencies of 900 or 1800 MHz. AT&T also offers phones that operate on 3G technology at 2100 MHz to roam in Japan and South Korea.  AT&T recommends quad band phones/devices for most international travelers. Since these wireless devices operate on all four of the international GSM frequencies, you ensure the broadest international coverage available.

Q. Can I access data services while traveling abroad?

A. Text Messaging is typically available in all countries in which AT&T has international voice roaming service (more than 220 countries). Picture, video messaging and GPRS data services are available in more than 195 countries and access to mobile broadband 3G networks is available in more than 120 countries. Q. What steps should I take if my data services are not registering?

A. If you are having difficulty using data services outside the U.S., try these troubleshooting steps:

Try manual scanning: Settings>Options>Network>Change network selection to manual>Click scan for new network>Select a network other than the one on which you are currently registered.
–For PDAs/Blackberry: Remove battery and reinsert.
–For PC Cards: Remove card; reboot computer; reinsert card. If connecting using the Cingular® or AT&T Communications Manager, click Connections, then click Non-Accelerated.

Q. With iPhone, smartphones (PDA/BlackBerry®), or a PC card, do I still have unlimited data usage when I travel outside the U.S.?

A. While using data on iPhone, smartphones (PDA/BlackBerry), or a PC Card may be unlimited within the U.S., Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands, international roaming rates apply for any voice or data usage outside our domestic coverage area and are not covered under your existing data plan.

A. The iPhone has many robust applications, so it's natural for users to transfer more data on their iPhone than they would using other handsets or PDA devices. AT&T offers the following tips to keep your bill predictable:

–Turn Data Roaming “OFF”
–Use Wi-Fi instead of 3G/GPRS/EDGE
–Turn Fetch New Data “OFF”
–Consider purchasing an international data package
–Reset the usage tracker to zero

Helpful Tips About GSM Roaming


  • Your GSM phone assumes the characteristics of the wireless network in each country you visit. So if you are traveling in Italy, your phone will work like a local Italian wireless device.
  • Upon arrival, you should learn how to make local calls in the country visited.
  • While roaming outside the U.S., be sure to make all international calls using the international format (+, country code, number). For example, to place an international call back to the United States, dial +1, then the area code and number (the U.S. country code is "1"). In most GSM devices, holding down the 0 key will cause the + sign to appear.
  • The 911 emergency number is unique to the U.S. In many European countries, the emergency number for police, fire, or ambulance is 112. Outside Europe, emergency numbers will vary by country.
  • When you are abroad and turn on your wireless phone, it will automatically search for a wireless network. Registration usually occurs within 30-40 seconds. When the name or network number of the local operator is displayed, your phone should be ready to use.
  • After your device registers abroad, customers with a data-centric device but without an international plan/package, may receive a free SMS message from AT&T advising the applicable data rate and where to go/call for more information (rates are sent to California consumers without an international plan/package, regardless of device type). Before traveling abroad, review our discount packages for calling, messaging or using data abroad.
  • Like any other appliance, you will need a universal phone charger and plug adapters for the countries you are visiting.
  • In some countries, using a wireless phone while driving is prohibited. Contact the local tourist information office for regulations that may apply.
